The issue of inheritance for women remains one of the most sensitive topics, in many cases the most neglected, which almost always ends silently to the detriment of women. NGO Me Dhe Për Gratë, targeting all women in Kosovo in particular, has launched an awareness campaign which aims to inform the whole society that the right to property is a fundamental right guaranteed and protected by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights regardless of gender.
Although by law in Kosovo men and women have equal rights, patriarchal and customary traditions often make it impossible for women to inherit their legally guaranteed inheritance. Kosovan society must understand that heritage lines apply equally to both men and women. Children, spouses and parents are indispensable heirs.
